Lithium-ion batteries’ cost seen dropping by 2017

Pike Research says the installed cost of lithium-ion batteries will fall by more than one-third by the end of 2017 as manufacturing efficiencies improve and access to lithium expands.

This drop in prices will affect the cost of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, which rely almost exclusively on lithium-ion batteries.

Pike Research's report indicates that the installed prices of EV batteries could be reduced by as much as $523 per kilowatt-hour in 2017.

Revenue-wise, the market for lithium-ion batteries for transportation could grow from $2 billion annually in 2011 to more than $14.6 billion by the expected year.

"The market for lithium-ion batteries will be driven primarily by plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and battery electric vehicles, which require much larger battery packs than hybrids," says research director John Gartner.

"Battery chemistries that prioritize energy capacity over power density can satisfy both the PHEV and EV battery segments, enabling vendors to offer products to multiple vendors for multiple models."

Government subsidies, which initiated the growth of the hybrid and electric vehicle market, will still continue driving the market, Pike said.

The report also stated that nearly half of demand is likely to come from Asia, led primarily by China. Europe and the United States are likely to constitute 25 percent and 21 percent of the market, respectively.

Despite the plethora in battery chemistries being commercialized, all with unique properties for power, energy density, and life cycle performance, greater interest in the lithium-ion phosphate chemistry will persist in years to come due to its superior performance characteristics coupled with increased safety. – EcoSeed Staff
