Hertz continues solar push, aims for 3.1 million kilowatts of energy generation

Car rental company The Hertz Corporation is continuing its push for renewable energy generation with the announcement that they are constructing two new solar installation sites to power their locations at the Newark International Airport and the John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The announcement serves as the initial launch of phase two of the company's solar energy program which was launched in February 2011 as part of Hertz's global sustainability strategy, Living Journey.

"Expanding our solar facilities is part of Hertz's ongoing commitment to sustainable business practices," said Mark P. Frissora, Hertz chairman and chief executive officer. "We have taken a number of steps over the past year to fulfill our goal of leading the travel industry in renewable energy production and utilizing energy best practices across our operations."

Hertz solar panel systems currently produce over 2.7 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. The two new locations will add an additional 800,000 kilowatt hours of renewable energy and save 641 tons of carbon emissions.

In 2012, Hertz will also complete the installation of eight additional solar systems at locations in Augusta, GA; Denver, CO; Los Angeles, CA; Macon, GA; Newark, NJ, New York, NY, and Boston, MA.

In total, Gertz will produce more than 3.1 million kilowatt hours of solar energy in the United States locations for emissions reductions of 2,138 metric tons annually.

Herz's Living Journey strategy also includes operational environmental programs such as energy management, waste reduction and resource conservation. They are also providing alternative fuel and fuel-efficient vehicles to their customers.
