British Gas to begin smart grid rollout

British Gas will be using software from Trilliant in their smart meter program.

British Gas will utilize communications headend software from California-based Trilliant Incorporated for the initial roll out of its smart metering activities.

British Gas, Britian’s leading home energy and home services provider, will use Triliant’s UnitySuite, an enterprise communications management software for smart electricity and gas meters, home energy displays, thermostats and other energy management devices.

UnitySuite’s platform can support a wide variety of devices and networks simultaneously. Trilliant expects to start the deployment for British Gas in December 2009.

Clint Wheelock, managing director at Pike Research, pointed out that Europe is going to be one of the fastest-growing smart grid markets in the coming years.

The British government already set out plans to replace 47 million existing domestic gas and electricity meters with smart meters by 2020.

British Gas is part of integrated energy company Centrica P.L.C., which is listed on the London Stock Exchange.
